Black Beans – Which are the best?

January 6, 2010

The results are in for our family canned Black Bean taste test.  And the winner is: Bush’s Beans!

Here’s a video of our black bean taste test:

3 out of 4 liked Bush’s Beans the best.  (The kids and my husband.)  I liked Goya the best.  But really – they both tasted good.  Bush’s beans are what I would call a more “distinct” flavor, and Goya had a more mild flavor.  Perhaps it’s a result of the difference in sodium content?

According to the nutrition lables (per 1/2 cup beans):

Bush’s Best: 480mg (20% Daily Value)

Goya: 460mg (19% Daily Value)

It looks like both Bush’s Beans and Goya have reduced sodium options for their canned black beans – good to know.

Now what do we do with all of these black beans?  Make Black Bean Brownies, of course!  My first foray into bean dessert territory.   I’ll let you know the results when I’m through and let you know how they were recieved.

This is wonderful (the StrivingBean). We have introduced our 11 month old son to beans and he loves them! I buy the dried beans and for all of our bean eating I have started buying the dried ones. It does take some of the spontaniety out of cooking them though. I have started to do small batch soaks though and it’s working great. I soak up a few servings overnite, cook them and then referigerate for up to a week. Also for baby food, you can grind them and it serioulsy decreases cooking time. I think you could also use this when you are adding beans to other dishes too…hmmm. Anyway, love to see your new blog and you can bet I’ll be following it!

Thanks Mellissa – so glad you’ll be returning for more! Beans are such a wonderful food for the little ones, aren’t they? And for grown-ups like us 🙂

Good for you for introducing such wonderfully nutritious food to your son’s diet! And grinding up beans to decrease cooking time? That is genius.

Did you know you can freeze beans too? Great for convenience. I think I’ll write a post for that.

Hey thanks for taking that on! I love black beans, and I can sometimes get away with sneaking them into all of our food, but I usually buy what is cheapest without noting which tastes best. Great post!
