Freeze Beans

Dried beans. Although inexpensive, they can take the spontaneity out of using beans in your cooking.

But did you know?  You can freeze beans. So now, using dried beans is very convenient.  Make a batch, freeze them, then reach in your freezer and thaw when you need them.

Freezing beans is simple, and it’s just like freezing strawberries.


How to Freeze Beans

Soak AND cook your beans, then drain them well.  Next you can:

  • Spread them evenly on a flat cookie sheet (you can line the sheet with parchment paper to make bean removal easier)
  • Freeze them 1 hour
  • Take them out of the freezer, then put them in a Freezer Ziploc (or a freezer safe container).
  • Return the beans to the freezer.

Freezing beans first on a cookie sheet will help freeze the beans individually, instead of in clumps. That way, when you want cook with your beans, it’s easier to get the portion you want out of the bag/container.


  • I’ve also frozen extra canned beans (rinsed & drained well) with this same method.
  • Beans keep for up to 3 months in the freezer.
  • When thawing, treat beans like meat.  Thaw overnight in fridge (not on the counter top) or you can thaw with a low setting in the microwave.

Now you know another way to have beans readily available so you can make some great bean-centric meals.  Won’t your kids be happy? (*grin*)

    I like your idea for freezing them on a cookie sheet first.

    Usually, I put my beans in a canning jar, screw on a lid, and freeze. Then when I want to thaw them, I put the open jar in a colander in the sink and run hot water over them until they are thawed and dump them out into the colander.

      Hi Sarah – Great ideas about thawing alternatives. By the way, did you know I originally learned from you that you can freeze beans? 🙂 And I found this from the US Dry Bean Council: “simply place a bag (of frozen beans) into hot water for five minutes or use the microwave oven.”

    I had no idea I could freeze beans. So glad to know it now. I can soak large-ish batches in advance and freeze them for immediate use when I need them more spontaneously. This is going to make a huge difference in my life! Thanks!

    Hi BT – just to clarify: be sure to soak AND cook the beans. Then freeze them. (Don’t just soak and freeze.) You probably already knew that – but I just want to make sure others out there understand too.

    Aha! I’ve been freezing beans in its own cooking water which made it a pain to thaw, etc. So I put up with the mushiness of the canned beans, or end up eating variety of bean dishes (from the same batch) day after day till I get sick of it, but this should save me from both! Thanks for sharing the tip!
